About Dr. Kamal
Dr. Tareq Kamal is a dual board-certified colon and rectal surgeon and Medical Director of Colorectal Surgery at Houston Methodist West Hospital in Houston, Texas. He brings nearly two decades of specialized surgical experience, international training, and a commitment to minimally invasive techniques that lead to faster recovery and superior outcomes for his patients.
Dr. Kamal earned his medical degree with honors from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, completed his General Surgery residency at the University of Illinois Metropolitan Group Hospitals Program in Chicago, and trained in Colorectal Surgery Fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine. He was among the first cohort of colorectal fellows to participate in the ASCRS Robotic Surgery Training Pilot Study — a nine-institution national program establishing the curriculum for robotic colorectal surgery in the United States.
Prior to joining Houston Methodist, Dr. Kamal served as Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at Central Michigan University and as Director and NAPRC Program Director of the Rectal Cancer Program at Covenant Hospital in Saginaw, Michigan — a program he established and led to full NAPRC accreditation by the American College of Surgeons, the gold standard for rectal cancer care in the United States.
At Houston Methodist West, Dr. Kamal serves as Co-Chair of the System Colorectal Cancer Clinical Performance Group, Co-Chair of the Underwood Digestive Care Access and Innovation Subcommittee and is a member of the Houston Methodist Neal Cancer Center and the Center for Restorative Pelvic Medicine.
